The heat is on! But it feels like your AC is not. And you just want a bit of comfort after a long day. The need for HVAC repairs is frustrating and can be expensive. But do not jump the gun yet. There are a few tricks to get the cool air flowing before calling an HVAC repair expert.

What to Do When Your AC is Not Working as it Should

1. Check Your Thermostat

A thermostat is a mechanism on the wall used to turn your air conditioning and heat on or off. If you have a new version, but not a digital one, the numbers on top are the ones you use to set your thermostat. The numbers on the bottom represent the actual temperature in your home. Ideally, these numbers should be the same. If not, check to see if the thermostat is on a wall that does not get too much sunlight, as this will cause confusion about the actual temperature.

2. Change Your AC Filter

If you notice a decrease in your AC unit’s airflow, the air filter could be clogged up. Your AC filter is responsible for collecting dirt, pollen, and dust to prevent them from entering your home. When it gets blocked up, it decreases the airflow. This build-up can even be a fire hazard. It is vital to change your AC filter regularly. This should be changed every 6-8 months. Clean air filters can even prolong your AC unit’s life.

When Your AC Stops Working Altogether

Sometimes, AC units stop working completely. It may happen at the peak of summer when you need it most. While waiting for your AC repair company to fix it, there are a few things you can do to cope with the sweltering summer.

1. Use Fans

If you have a ceiling fan, use it with your freestanding or floor fan. The combination can help create airflow in the home on days when the wind is nowhere to be found. Fans also use less electricity than AC.

2. Seal Home Leaks

Houses have insulation that does not allow the indoor temperature to change as easily as outdoor temperatures. Your job is to ensure that doors and windows stay closed so your house can keep the cool air in and the warm air outside. You can put towels over the gaps under your doors to play it safe. Every little bit of cool air counts on a hot day.

3. Buy The Right Curtains

You need curtains with light colors that block sunlight out of the room completely. These curtains should be especially hung on windows facing east and west.

Maintain Your AC Throughout the Summer

1. AC Tune-ups

It may be impossible to stop your AC from breaking completely, but you can prevent it. Regular AC tune-ups and AC maintenance will extend the life of your AC. This should be done just before summer.

2. Fix Malfunctions as They Happen

Don’t wait until your AC breaks completely. When you notice something isn’t right, call your AC company immediately to fix it before it causes more damage.
